Question:

Guess what I got fer my birthday?  A 6 hour roadtrip and a weekend stay in the home town of my ink-slingin’ arteest to finish up my sleeve!  (It’s about 90% done, but been waiting like 2 years to actually finish it off completely.)  It’ll happen next month.  He booked the whole day for me, so if we finish up the arm soon enough – I might have him start something new too.  I want a *BIG* piece done on my belly.  And I’m thinking real hard about having the sleeve extend down onto my hand…real hard.  Anyone have a pic of a hand tattoo that they really like?  Or a sleeve that incorporates it? — G

Question:

Just curious, do tattoos on yer fingers hurt a lot if at all? I’ve heard it’s worse on the bone and that’s mainly what fingers are, but the ink would be rather small, so I was just wondering if the pain is high or low. Thanks in advance.

I have both hands and knuckles done, and I can honestly say,yes they sucked. not only to have tattooed but to heal as well. and I can also warn you that while being heavily tattooed makes a you a bit of a stand out getting your hands tattooed is a whole nother reality. Rev

Wanted: another piercing "appropriate" for a med student

So, are there any suggestions?  No genital, no more ear.  I’m probably out of options, eh?

Septum.  Get a dark niobium retainer as the initial jewelry and nobody at school need ever know about it. That said, you might end up discovering that people make less of a big deal than you think about any visible non-ear piercings. —       LEGAL NOTICE:  I am a WASHINGTON STATE RESIDENT.  Unsolicited bulk        E-mail may be billed $500 each in accordance with Chapter 19 RCW.

Hey all– So I’m a first year med student with a 14g nipple and two ear holes (which used to be a lobe orbital, but had to take the jewelry out and couldn’t get it back in, so they’re now just two regular earring holes).  After every test (and before I started med school, for significant events in my life) I like to go through a little rite of passage (i.e., do a little something for myself). That’s basically where my piercings (and my tattoo) come from.  But now I’m kind of running out of ideas on what to do next. I was thinking either tongue or eyebrow, but as much as I’d like it, I don’t think I could go through med school with a healing tongue (we need to talk more than y’all think), and I’m really afraid of all that nasty stuff that can happen to your teeth.  And for the eyebrow, the healing time is over a month, and I don’t think I could go that amount of time waiting for it to heal while I may have to see patients, deal with the wrath of my professors, etc.  (After the healing process, I’d use a retainer, but it’d take too much time to get to that point). So, are there any suggestions?  No genital, no more ear.  I’m probably out of options, eh? TIA! Jon

Just keep it very clean and it will be fine. Make sure you wash all of the sweat off of the new tattoo. (Gently!) But then I guess strength training in my chest area is out of the question…..

Just for now. I’d give the tattoo a couple of weeks to heal. Concentrate on legs and abs and stuff, and if doing upper arm work stretches the tattoo too much or makes it itch, take it easy. I was working out regularly about a week (maybe 10 days) after my last tattoo. — Danamania Bitch #16 HLA#7 ‘96 FXD-Conv "Roxie" Web:  http://www.chaeron.com/danamania/ NOTE:  Remove Spamicide ™ before replying!!!

My tattooist always recommends letting an area that gets a lot of movement rest for a few days after a tattoo.  I go to an aerobics class and when I had my upper arms and shoulders done, he told me not to do the typical arm waving stuff for 3 or 4 days.  Apparently its not so much the sweat, but the motion itself that forces out new ink.  Like why hand tattoos fade so fast. sid

I’ve actually gotten tattooed on a Sunday and gone to aerobics (step) on Monday night without any problems. I sweated like a pig. Of course, if the tattoo is on an area that you’ll be flexing, etc. during exercise (like maybe a leg or arm for example), you might want to avoid going to the gym until the initial healing period is over or, if possible, avoid moving that part of your body you had tattooed until it’s healed. -briank The Mother of all munches is coming! Tattoos on the Hand???

Question:

I’ve been drawing some designs on the back of my hand lately as well.

always a good start. before my first tattoo i spent months sketching along my calf until i came up with a pattern/design i liked… Are there areas on the hand that shouldn’t be tattooed?  like the areas near veins? it seems like there are some large veins very close to the skin on the back of my hand.

veins should prove no problem. the ink goes into the skin. the skin is over the vein. no problem. i have a big vein/artery going down the inside of my ankle and it is inked up with no problem. — Zaphod

Response:

Since I got my first tattoo I have been thinking about what else I would like to add. I really liked the hand tattoos on the woman in one of the ReSearch books, her name slips me at the moment.  The were tribal designs consisting of lines and dots. I’ve been drawing some designs on the back of my hand lately as well. Are there areas on the hand that shouldn’t be tattooed?  like the areas near veins? it seems like there are some large veins very close to the skin on the back of my hand.   I mainly want the design off to the side and not on the center back of the hand.  I guess I mainly am looking into what my options are with a hand tattoo and what constricts me for my design. Most likely anything is possible to be done but I want to be safe and not have any real risky work done. Anyone have hand tattoos that would like to share their experience? Thanks in advance… e   r   i   k

I’ll spare you all the "why a tattoo on your hand can be a bad idea" stuff; presumably you already know this. I’ve seen many hand tattoos, covering all sorts of parts of the hand. All areas seem to be able to be covered (even over veins), but even the "hardest" skinhead I’ve ever met did not have tattoos over the actual knuckles—too painful he said. His hands looked a bit odd as a result: dark tattooing everywhere except the knuckles; made his hands look disconnected or something. Actually I have seen one or two people with tattoos on their finger joints, but really not very often. The other noticable commanality of hand tattoos I’ve seen is blurriness: you really can’t keep the design out of the sun, so over time it gets smearier and smearier. Obviously exceptions exist to what I’ve said above, but pretty much all I’ve seen bears this out. And please do at least listen to those who will tell you why hand tattoos may well not be the best idea ever (pretty tho’ they may be…) jonathan
