How I spent the weekend not smoking

My DD came in with this henna "temporary" tattoo kit on Saturday. I was still feeling really funky over the prospect of the holidays, etc etc and well, whatever. So the upshot of it is, she says Mom, would you do one of my hands with this henna? So I do. (Without sounding too proud, I am good at that sort of thing.) I cover the back of her entire right hand and part of her wrist with a henna tattoo – flowers leaves and so forth – a pretty traditional Indi design really. It takes me about an hour to do, maybe longer. So we spent the bulk of Saturday afternoon doing this. I really *needed* the distraction. And anytime your 16 y/o DD wants to spend time with her mother, you think twice about saying no. Then she did my hands – a simpler design than the one I used on her, but still fairly large. When I took it off, it was just a faint reddish brown – as a matter of fact, I was thinking Clarissa would be disappointed if hers was that faint. Little did I know it darkens – at lot – over the next 24 hrs. Sunday morning I have these dark red-brown tattoos over the backs of both hands. Then I find out from Clarissa it could last 1-3 weeks. Oh well. I’m a 43 year old woman with no makeup, two real tattoos, *very* short hair, more than two ear piercings (7 total, but not symmetrical), so people have come to expect me to be a little different. But hey, it got me through the day and past the majority of funkiness of the day. Victoria who…. hasn’t smoked for: 20 days, 10 hrs, and 5 min. Cigarettes not smoked: 413 Money saved: 66.08

You can never get enough garlic.

Yesterday I did whatever I felt like doing, by myself.  I went to the Y & exercised & saunaed.  Have you ever gone to a sauna?  Can you wear clothing in there or do you have to be naked?

Bathing suit usually.  Polyester business suits are probably not a good idea.

One of my Aunt’s friend was mad for garlic and used to stink of garlic

most

times. I always tried to avoid hugging her. Well, then, I won’t hug you  :)

But you are not mad for garlic (really she used garlic in everything)  so I’d like it if you did hug me.:)

You do sound hyper. :)  I don’t know how I can sleep that much, and I

don’t

question it.

So that’s the secret, eh? Not questioning it. It sounds easy to do but I don’t think it is. Way to go EM! :) I’d probably feel guilty if I slept a lot. I shouldn’t though cos I do need to.

What’s the most you’ve seen someone wear into a sauna?

Ermm I think the most would be a guy wearing a vest and boxers and also a towel…….I think he was shy. :) But he took off his towel later on. Otherwise I just saw most people with towels.

Sleep a lot, and don’t have anything scheduled, and don’t be around

demanding

people.

I think I’ll do this coming sunday. I shall make no plans. I’m actually getting excited at the thought of spending some time just on my own chilling out….

Nope.

 A catwoman then? :)

What would you like to do instead?

That got me thinking actually. I never really think about that much. At first I was like I don’t know….:) But now that I’ve thought about it, I’d like to play badminton …spend more time drawing and reading……watch comedy…..just stay in bed listen to Radio 4 while reading and fall asleep……..and cook something nice…..talk to Larry…..just invite my husband, Micky and Laura and chill out talking about all sorts of stuff and discussing things…..I feel really comfortable with them…..also love talking to my family over the phone….pubbing/clubbing but only with people who I’m comfortable with and I don’t have to make an effort. Otherwise it’s just a waste. Oh actually I am getting into body painting now….not all over but just little elegant drawings you know. I drew a symbolic dragon on Laura’s arms last week and I really enjoyed that. :) It was more of a henna tattoo actually than paint…. Angel

I know.  I ate garlic every day for 4 years, then I got a little tired of chopping it up.  I actually ordered a garlic press, which hasnt’ arrived yet, so that might make it easier.

I’ve been out every single night since Thu and all three nights have been draining and depressing! I don’t know what’s wrong with me but I just find everything tedious. Yes, few times. But the last time was about two years back near Christmas. We hired a cottage in Anglesey and they had a sauna, hot swimming pool and the lot. There weren’t too many people around either so it was all nice and quiet.

Can you wear clothing in there or do you have to be naked?

Response:

Garlic sounds good. I slept real deep but all I did yesterday is smoke pot to supress my deep and conflicting emotions but it didnt work. I should have put some of the surplus adrenaline left over from my crazy week into going out and doing something or whatever but I hit the bong the second I got out of bed and thats what I did with my whole day. I feel a bit more groggy and detached today I need to go out and get some office supplies etc but dont know if I will make it. I feel really weird this weekend I can figure a way to move forward instead of a hard crash and burn which is also a real possibility.

a shower (sp SI)

Question:

web site abt SI, has form to fill out when you’re urging http://www.palace.net/~llama/psych/injury.html be with a safe & supportive person, call friend, wrtie in a journal, watch a funnie movie, go for a drive, listen to music, go for a walk, clean a closet, a dresser, the kitchen, take a bubble bath, most importantly get rid of anything you can hurt yourself with So what do I do instead? Many people try substitute activities as described above and report that sometimes they work, sometimes not. One way to increase the chances of a distraction/substitution helping calm the urge to harm is to match what you do to how you are feeling at the moment. First, take a few moments and look behind the urge. What are you feeling? Are you angry? Frustrated? Restless? Sad? Craving the feeling of SI? Depersonalized and unreal or numb? Unfocused? Next, match the activity to the feeling. A few examples: angry, frustrated, restless Try something physical and violent, something not directed at a living thing: Slash an empty plastic soda bottle or a piece of heavy cardboard or an old shirt or sock. Make a soft cloth doll to represent the things you are angry at. Cut and tear it instead of yourself. Flatten aluminum cans for recycling, seeing how fast you can go. Hit a punching bag. Use a pillow to hit a wall, pillow-fight style. Rip up an old newspaper or phone book. On a sketch or photo of yourself, mark in red ink what you want to do. Cut and tear the picture. Make Play-Doh or Sculpey or other clay models and cut or smash them. Throw ice into the bathtub or against a brick wall hard enough to shatter it. Break sticks. I’ve found that these things work even better if I rant at the thing I am cutting/tearing/hitting. I start out slowly, explaining why I am hurt and angry, but sometimes end up swearing and crying and yelling. It helps a lot to vent like that. Crank up the music and dance. Clean your room (or your whole house). Go for a walk/jog/run. Stomp around in heavy shoes. Play handball or tennis. sad, soft, melancholy, depressed, unhappy Do something slow and soothing, like taking a hot bath with bath oil or bubbles, curling up under a comforter with hot cocoa and a good book, babying yourself somehow. Do whatever makes you feel taken care of and comforted. Light sweet-smelling incense. Listen to soothing music. Smooth nice body lotion into the parts or yourself you want to hurt. Call a friend and just talk about things that you like. Make a tray of special treats and tuck yourself into bed with it and watch TV or read. Visit a friend. craving sensation, feeling depersonalized, dissociating, feeling unreal Do something that creates a sharp physical sensation: Squeeze ice hard (this really hurts). (Note: putting ice on a spot you want to burn gives you a strong painful sensation and leaves a red mark afterward, kind of like burning would.) Put a finger into a frozen food (like ice cream) for a minute. Bite into a hot pepper or chew a piece of gingerroot. Rub liniment under your nose. Slap a tabletop hard. Snap your wrist with a rubber band. Take a cold bath. Stomp your feet on the ground. Focus on how it feels to breathe. Notice the way your chest and stomach move with each breath. [NOTE: Some people report that being online while dissociating increases their sense of unreality; be cautious about logging on in a dissociative state until you know how it affects you.] wanting focus Do a task (a computer game like tetris or minesweeper, writing a computer program, needlework, etc) that is exacting and requires focus and concentration. Eat a raisin mindfully. Pick it up, noticing how it feels in your hand. Look at it carefully; see the asymmetries and think about the changes the grape went through. Roll the raisin in your fingers and notice the texture; try to describe it. Bring the raisin up to your mouth, paying attention to how it feels to move your hand that way. Smell the raisin; what does it remind you of? How does a raisin smell? Notice that you’re beginning to salivate, and see how that feels. Open your mouth and put the raisin in, taking time to think about how the raisin feels to your tongue. Chew slowly, noticing how the texture and even the taste of the raisin change as you chew it. Are there little seeds or stems? How is the inside different from the outside? Finally, swallow. Choose an object in the room. Examine it carefully and then write as detailed a description of it as you can. Include everything: size, weight, texture, shape, color, possible uses, feel, etc. Choose a random object, like a paper clip, and try to list 30 different uses for it. Pick a subject and research it on the web. Try some of the games and distractions at digibeet’s page; she’s assembled a lot of distractions. wanting to see blood Draw on yourself with a red felt-tip pen. Take a small bottle of liquid red food coloring and warm it slightly by dropping it into a cup of hot water for a few minutes. Uncap the bottle and press its tip against the place you want to cut. Draw the bottle in a cutting motion while squeezing it slightly to let the food color trickle out. Draw on the areas you want to cut using ice that you’ve made by dropping six or seven drops of red food color into each of the ice-cube tray wells. Paint yourself with red tempera paint. wanting to see scars or pick scabs Get a henna tattoo kit. You put the henna on as a paste and leave it overnight; the next day you can pick it off as you would a scab and it leaves an orange-red mark behind. Another thing that helps sometimes is the fifteen-minute game. Tell yourself that if you still want to harm yourself in 15 minutes, you can. When the time is up, see if you can go another 15. I’ve been able to get through a whole night that way before.

I was in the gym doing dumbbell shoulder presses with the 30K dumbbells..I know it’s pathetic but I have weak shoulders :( Anyway on the last few reps I kinda struggled and my training vest managed to get caught around it. artistic expression

Question:

Hello.  I know what you mean about the artistic expression.  I draw and paint myself and lately its been really hard to get up the motivation.  I also understand your frustration.  But, take it from someone who has tried, guitar is INCREDIBLY frustrating to start learning, especially if one is suffering from the impatience of that frustration.  I encourage you to keep on writing and drawing, whether the words are good or the drawings perfect, they are your feelings and as such makes them both good and perfect.  And, as an old art professor once told me, "Draw what you see, not what you think you see."  Just go with your instinct, and let everything evolve from there. At all costs, don’t try to plan where you’re going with it or expect much. I find that I do my best work when I have no expectations whatsoever and then I take a step back in a few hours and say, "Hey, that’s pretty interesting."  Good luck!     Kenneth

yes, it is a kind of art….and i think i am a perfectionist….a failed one, but still a perfectionist, and the applies to conversation as well, and i think is a big part of the problem of why i have trouble

communicating…. I suppose so. I have perfectionist streaks myself (I use dictionaries when chatting, I lend grammar books at the library). But I guess all things are two-sided. I bet you could be a good language teacher, or anything that has to do with language. Perhaps a researcher? Perfectionism goes well with research IMO. i have enough trouble with english, much less any other languages…i wish i could learn another one though…

Err, I tend to curse my language skills since I tend to speak using Swedish grammar in English, vice-versa and my German and Finnish sound REAL funny. But I can translate, I suppose. actually i think for some people they are. They have a natural talent for some things, and training only makes them better…

Yeah….tho they are terribly rare. it may be coherent, but it’s still not what i really want or mean to say….it’s like describing a dream to someone that you only half remember….or like i asked in a post before….what are a blind person’s dreams like, and how would they describe them to a seeing person…

Yeah…but sometimes people don’t have to say what they really mean to get it across. The other end in the discussion fills in bits and pieces, too, I guess. Which means that the real message usually comes across, even if it might have changed in some way. (Which it does, no matter how well/right/etc you describe it. Don’t work at it so hard. The best way I found to create what I feel is to just let go and let it out. You don’t HAVE to create anything that anyone would approve of or like (which is the biggest hangup we have, I think.) Just create to create. And do it out of the moment. I perform a type of music called freesong. It uses vocables (syllables that sound like a language but are not, instead of words). I sing whatever tune comes into my head, mostly improvised, some remembered things, and use the vocables, to express pure feeling. I will sometimes sit down for a few minutes and just write whatever comes into my head. It doesn’t have to make sense. But what comes out of it usually leads to a poem, or song lyric. I will doodle. Doodling is art for the hell of it. No rhyme or reason. And usually you can find out a lot about yourself from your doodles. Doodles grow up and become abstract art. Concentrating on colors and textures and shapes to convey emotion, not specific objects or images. Just begin and stop expecting anything of yourself. You need to fly every once in awhile. Like this: (I’m going for one minute of writing without thought) Coriander ribbons became a moment when I thought you might just stand a little by me. But the moon was waning, and you were stuck in the middle of a street I knew not where, just somewhere too far for me to see. Whatever I have done, it is nothing compared to you, or what you wore the first time I ever saw you, beside the stream in some Irish song. Your creative mind thinks a whole lot faster than you ever can. It’s just waiting for you to let it out in the yard for a run. Good luck, Sandra – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

yep, that’s pretty much it…but unlike your apple example where i know the two kinds you are talking about and you can pretty much describe them, it doesn’t seem like i can do that with the ideas i want to convey….or something like that….um….does that make sense?

It makes sense to me, sort of. Depression is confusing. It makes at least me believe I can’t convey anything, the words look like if I was trying to write in Hebrew, and I know that nothing I say will be what I want to say. Then again, I don’t know what the heck I *want* to say, either. But in reality it tends to coem out ok no matter what. I think what you’re saying is coming out great, too. ranting is always good….in limited amounts though   :)

You should see me on IRC going at it. *grin* well, i hope that is the case, but i think that sometimes nothing can be done to improve some things….

Sure, no tongue – no talk. No fingers – no (normal) writing. But you have a tongue, fingers, and a brain. It seems to work for me, even though it’s confusing for you if you are in a depressed state. Or something like that. yes, i guess i want to try some of those things with other people though….i don’t think i would find any enjoyment in doing those things alone….at least the things that don’t cost much….that’s why i want to try and learn guitar and photography, i think i would enjoy doing those things alone.  I always wanted to get a tattoo….i’m too picky about a design though and where it would go….

Quite few things are fun alone, you’re right. (I have a secret dream of photographing, too, actually….it’s EXPENSIVE as you say :-/ ) Henna tattoos last about two weeks. If you aren’t satisfied with one you can choose another when it’s gone away (or earlier if you want several at once :) . I think depressed people always think too much. That’s part of being depressed. why is that? is a depressed persons brain set up differently, or is it a chemical that causes it or what?

One of them, all, or something else? I dunno.  yeah, i think that is pretty close, but what really bothers me is that i don’t understand myself…and how can i expect other people to understand me, when i can’t.

Use people and interactions as your mirrors, I suppose. How, I don’t know. (Pick up cognitive psychology Intrapersonal psychology?) Take care, /petri Before you buy.

Sort of wrong colur on the words, or wrong tune to the drawings type? I mean in a *metaphoric* way. Just so noone will send the Haldol guys after me. :)

well, i hope that is the case, but i think that sometimes nothing can be done to improve some things…. Well…..there are lots of things….you can sculpture (wood/ice/pick your choice), make things like cups/shelves/clothes/software, make collages of newspaper (or other) clips that express some part of your message, you can use clay, even Play-Doh, pick up dancing, start a church (err, just kidding), get a (henna) tattoo, do body painting, sing, or basically anything. Lots of things can be used as carriers for messages. Sooner or later you’ll find the one that’s right for you.

why is that? is a depressed persons brain set up differently, or is it a chemical that causes it or what? Been there done that. I percieve you as a coherent human bean, feeling easily misunderstood (perhaps not understood at all), who is depressed, at the same time as you are looking for a way to make people see you and your message. Am I close? Totally off-track?

I think conversation is a kind of art, actually. Every newsgroup posting, every chat with your coworkers, every phone call to your lover, all of those are little artistic doodles to me.

yes, it is a kind of art….and i think i am a perfectionist….a failed one, but still a perfectionist, and the applies to conversation as well, and i think is a big part of the problem of why i have trouble communicating…. Been there done that. Very often. Whether or not I seak Finnish or Swedish or English or whatever everything comes out in an odd way. I write poems no matter what, tho. :)

i have enough trouble with english, much less any other languages…i wish i could learn another one though… No-one comes like those new PCs ready-installed with software for sound, video and pictures. You have to "install" your "mental graphics/printer drivers" and train them. They aren’t there per default.

actually i think for some people they are. They have a natural talent for some things, and training only makes them better… Don’t give up. I percieve you as entirely coherent, so I can’t see why you should give up.

it may be coherent, but it’s still not what i really want or mean to say….it’s like describing a dream to someone that you only half remember….or like i asked in a post before….what are a blind person’s dreams like, and how would they describe them to a seeing person… -ship – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’ll reply to the first message in the thread while I’m at it… *hug* /petri Before you buy.

connected it. I get very frustrated when i write or draw things because they never come out the way i want it to.

That is what i have been lacking for so long….some way to get out the stuff in my head but in a way that is a good representation of what it is……

I suppose so…I’ve found my way tho….ranting. :P It still gets wrong often, tho. writing doesn’t work, drawing doesn’t work….there has to be some way….i guss maybe that’s why i’ve

sigh….okay, so maybe i leaned to heavy on the artistic part…..i have trouble just talking about everyday things to people and having a decent conversation. I’m not even trying to create "art" or anything like

that. I think conversation is a kind of art, actually. Every newsgroup posting, every chat with your coworkers, every phone call to your lover, all of those are little artistic doodles to me. well….i suppose that is what is happening right now, i don’t think i am being understood correctly. Holiday stress and chemicals

Question:

Hi Arruntia, Good your feeling better…..Denavir is for oral OB’s right?  Others have had similar results with this.. The tatoo thing sounds funky and fun…Is that temporary I assume???? That could make for a strange day at the beach…..lol Love, Mary – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Path: lobby!newstf02.news.aol.com!audrey04.news.aol.com!not-for-mail Newsgroups: alt.support.herpes Lines: 25 NNTP-Posting-Host: ladder05.news.aol.com Organization: AOL http://www.aol.com Hej, Seems all the holiday stress gave me an unexpected breakout – I wasn’t expecting one until next year.  It gave me an opportunity to try out the Denavir, though.  While it didn’t cut down noticable on the number of days the virus was visiting, it did cut down on the severity of the visit, which was pretty nice. And slightly OT, when I can, I do some mehndi (or henna tattoo, as the media at large calls it).  I make a paste out of henna and lemon juice and decorate myself silly.  The colour comes out to be in the brownish area, which is fine with me, but there are a lot of people out there who want the results to be black.  To do this, they add all sorts of things to the paste – nail polish remover, gasoline/kerosine (sorry for the bad spelling) and the like.  Even diluted with henna and lemon juice, this is not a good idea and could do some damage to the skin.  I can’t imagine putting bleach or something similar directly on your skin for any reason.  (I’m not a big fan of diluted bleach for cleaning, but that’s something else altogether.) Best, Anne Each day we get through means one less mistake there for the making.  -Chess
